Theme: Quantum Sensing Microscopes for Next-Gen Semiconductor Failure Analysis

The continuous scaling of semiconductor devices and the introduction of advanced packaging architectures such as 2.5D and 3D integration have created new challenges for defect localization and failure analysis. Traditional methods often require destructive cross-sectioning or provide limited sensitivity to buried current paths. Quantum sensing microscopes based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond offer a non-destructive, high-resolution approach to magnetic current imaging. By detecting nanoscale magnetic fields generated by currents within chips, these systems provide direct electrical insight into complex device structures without physical contact or invasive preparation. This capability enables localization of faults in through-silicon vias, micro-bumps, and high-bandwidth memory stacks, accelerating root-cause analysis and improving yield. Beyond enhancing diagnostic precision, quantum sensing microscopes contribute to more sustainable semiconductor manufacturing by reducing scrap and minimizing material waste. As the semiconductor industry advances toward increasingly heterogeneous integration, quantum diamond microscopy is positioned to become a benchmark tool for next-generation failure analysis and inline process monitoring.
