Dr. Shih-Wei Sun, Founding Partner, Silicon Catalyst Ventures

Dr. Shih-Wei Sun is the Founding Partner of Silicon Catalyst Ventures and Board Member of Silicon Catalyst in Bay Area, California. Previously, Dr. Sun served as Vice Chairman, CEO, and COO of UMC. Before UMC, he worked at Motorola Semiconductor in Austin, Texas on 68000 series and PowerPC microprocessors. After retirement from UMC, Dr. Sun held leadership and advisory roles with McKinsey, GSR Capital, ACHI Capital, and served as Chairman of Advanced Micro Foundry (silicon photonics), Smarter Micro (RF front-end). He was also board director of UMC, Unimicron, Epistar, A*STAR Singapore, Dense Light, PE/VC firms, and Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. From 2017 to 2022, he was the Global EVP of Tsinghua Unigroup and CEO of XMC. Dr. Sun earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University, where he was also honored the 2016 Distinguished Career Achievement Award.

As the next wave of growth is increasingly driven by startups, building a strong innovation ecosystem that connects entrepreneurs with industry experts, strategic partners, and investors is essential. This talk will share how Silicon Catalyst has developed a global accelerator ecosystem to help semiconductor startups transform breakthrough technologies into successful companies, and illustrate how Taiwan may leverage its unique strengths to foster the next generation of globally competitive semiconductor startups.
