From Automation to Autonomy: Adoption Blueprints and Investment Map for Intelligent Robotics in the Fab
Semiconductor manufacturing has led the world in automation for three decades. Overhead hoist transport, automated material-handling systems, and precision wafer-handling robots already move product through 300mm fabs with minimal human touch. Yet "highly automated" is not "autonomous." Automation follows fixed rules in structured environments; autonomy requires machines that perceive, reason, and act under variable conditions with little human direction. Closing that gap has shifted from a research aspiration to a concrete engineering and investment question.
This session examines the technical bottlenecks on the path to autonomy (e.g. embodied and world models, sim-to-real training, edge compute, agentic orchestration, and dexterous manipulation) and where each stands today. We then map where autonomous robots create real value on the fab floor and lay out an adoption blueprint for large-scale deployers, including partnership models. Finally, we share a point of view on where the returns sit along the value chain, and which segments are most attractive to build or invest in.
