Abstract:

Since the 60s, the semiconductor industry has been using the physical dimension in the chip to denote the progress from one technology generation to the next technology generation. By now, it is abundantly clear that the physical dimension of devices in the chip bears little correlation with the essential characteristics that define a semiconductor technology, and the node number no longer represents advancement of technology. I believe it is necessary for the semiconductor industry to adopt a new metric that properly captures the advancement of technology that will be realized in the coming decades. The use of this new metric will allow companies, research institutes, academic researchers, students, funding agencies, and government policy makers to recognize and project the trajectory of technological progress.
